How can I protect against WannaCry?

WannaCry la nouvelle terreur d'Internet

WannaCry is the last recensed ransomware which has recently impacted more than 200,000 users in 150 countries. A ransomware is a malware that crypts your datas and asks money for giving them back. That type of malware are known for several years but the last one was particularly efficient.

  1. Impacted people has several choices, first advice, do not pay the ransom, there is no guarantee that the hackers will give you any key after they have received your money. More, your payment credentials could be hacked as well.
  2. Then, it is possible to reformate your computers, you will be safe but you’ll have to restart from scratch, all your datas would be lost (this the reason why back-up are so important).
  3. The best solution seems to call your informating system director or operator who is the best person to deal with those type of problems. We can add that, after few days or weeks, a ransomware will be inefficient because the decryption key will be known.
Prevention is better than cure, it is essential to be aware of what is possible to avoid those kind of problems. First thing to do, update your tools, make sure with your DSI that Windows update is active on every machine.
Plus, watch your web browser, a non-updated browser could be an opened door for all the malware or phishing attacks. Do not forget to check on the SSL certification (SSL, green bar..)

Hosters are in the frontline, Ikoula has not been impacted yet, thanks to our prevention securities. The first security is the infrastructure your datas are stored in, Data Center are high-protected places.
For Joaquim Dos Santos, our head of R&D, the priority is on the hiring and formation of the technical team on these issues.
You can watch this video that shows how secured is a DataCenter (in French)
